Metode pembuatan Kemasan Kaleng dari Tinplate:
• Printing
dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk pembuatan : dekorasi dan melindungi
kaleng dari karat atau untuk mencegah reaksi antara tinplate dengan
bahan yang dikemas.
• Slitting / Shearing adalah
proses memotong tinplate menjadi body blank atau strip yang digunakan
untuk pembuatan komponen-komponen kaleng sesuai kebutuhan.
• Pressing adalah proses pembuatan komponen-komponen kaleng seperti tutup atas / bawah atau body kaleng
• Keuntungan:
- Banyak untuk produk makanan
- Perlindungan menyeluruh terhadap isinya
- Ketahanan suhu bagus
- Tahan terhadap perubahan suhu dan tekanan
- Ketahanan mekanis bagus
• Kekurangan:
- Daya tahan terhadap korosi kurang
- Adanya lipatan
Alumunium mempunyai beberapa sifat yang menguntungkan ataupun merugikan untuk dijadikan bahan kemasan.
• Keuntungan:
- Berat lebih ringan dari pada baja dan timah
- Mudah dilekukkan sehingga mudah dibentuk
- Tidak berbau, tidak berasa dan tidak beracun
- dapat menahan masuknya gas atau uap air
• Kerugian:
- Sukar disolder sehingga sambungan menjadi kurang rapat
- bila terlipat maka mudah terjadi lubang
- tidak mampu sebagai kemasan kalau hanya terbuat dari alumunium murni.
Untuk mengatasi kekurangan atau mengurangi biaya dan memperbaiki daya
tahannya terhadap korosi Logam-logam yang biasanya digunakan sebagai
campuran pada pembuatan wadah aluminium adalah tembaga, magnesium,
mangan, khromium dan seng.
Tinplate
adalah lembaran (sheet) baja ringan kadar karbon rendah (low-carbon
mild steel) yang bervariasi dalam ketebalan antara 0,15 sd. 0,5 mm
dengan coating setebal 0,4 µm sd. 2,5 µm pada kedua permukaan material
sifat mekanis
– Ductility (kemampuan untuk dideformasi yang ekstensif tanpa retak), dan
– Drawability (sifat ini muncul dari pemilihan level baja dan kondisi pemprosesan dalam pembuatan)
– Kemampuan solder yang bagus
– Mampu las
– Tidak beracun
– Sifat lumas
– Lacquerability
– Permukaan tahan korosi yang mengkilap (sifat khas tin)
Lapisan tin mengikut
pada dasarnya yaitu baja, maksudnya bila diberikan sejumlah deformasi
di mana baja masih tahan, tin juga akan tahan
Pembuatan tin plate
Metode tradisional:
• yaitu
dengan mencelupkan atau melewatkan baja melalui sebuah tin cair murni
setelah perlakuan permukaan khusus untuk menghilangkan oksida yang ada.
• Kekurangannya adalah dihasilkan coating yang tidak seragam
Cara modern: ELECTROPLATING
Keuntungan electroplating:
• Mampu membuat level coating yang tak mampu dibuat dengan pencelupan
• Mampu membuat lapisan dengan ketebalan yang berbeda pada kedua permukaan
• Ekonomis bagi pemakai karena mampu membuat lapisan yang berbeda antara luar dan dalam sesuai keadaan yang dihadapi.
Ada dua metode terkenal untuk tinplating:
• Ferrostan process (acid stannous sulfate process)
• Halogen process
Keunggulan ECCS:
• Permukaan ECCS lebih diterima untuk coating enamel pelindung (lacquer) atau tinta cetak dan pernis dari pada tinplate
• Ketiadaan
lapisan tin dengan titik leleh rendah (232ºC) berarti suhu stoving yang
tinggi sehingga waktu stoving yang lebih singkat dapat digunakan untuk
peng-enamel-an (lacquering) ECCS
Kerugian :
• ECCS
kurang resis (tahan) terhadap korosi dibanding tinplate karena tidak
adanya lapisan tin yang dikorbankan, dan sehingga harus di-email-kan
pada kedua sisinya.
• Sebagai
tambahan container (kaleng) ECCS tidak disolder dengan lead tradisional
atau solder tin sehingga pengikatan ECCS harus dengan pengelasan atau
dengan bahan perekat organik.
• Bila
disolder, ECCS harus dibersihkan lebih dahulu untuk menghapus lapisan
chromium. Secara mekanis proses ini sangat lamban, mahal dan tidak
efisien.

PEMBUATAN TUTUP KALENG
Tutup kaleng meskipun sederhana tetapi merupakan sebuah pengembangan desain yang rumit untuk mengatasi deformasi optimum.
Deformasi ini tergantung pada:
n Ketebalan pelat
n Kepresisian kontur dari expansion ring (lekuk pengembangan)
n Kedalaman countersink
Kekuatan tutup (strength) ditentukan oleh:
n Bahan dan perlakuan temper dari logam yang digunakan
n Kedalaman / bentuk countersink
ketahanan
terhadap distorsi oleh tekanan internal, hal ini ditentukan oleh adanya
satu/lebih expansion rings yang melingkari tutup
FIXED END
Tutup konvensional dibentuk dari lembaran tinplate atau TFS yang biasanya telah dilapisi pada kedua permukaannya, yaitu
n Enamel pada sisi dalam, dan
n Enamel/pengecatan pada sisi luar (exterior)
Manufakturnya Fixed End
n Pemotongan blank rata dengan ukuran yang diperlukan untuk pembuatan tutup
n Pembuatan panel steps (countersink dan expansion rings), yang memberikan tutup tahan terhadap tekanan internal dan kevakuman
n Pembentukan pinngiran yang dicanangkan untuk seaming (pelipitan)
n Deposisi seaming compound diikuti dengan curing
EASY OPEN END (EOE/ EOC)
Keuntungan:Mudah dibuka dengan tarikan jari
Jenis:
- Buka sedikit à biasanya untuk minuman
- Buka full à untuk bahan padat
Bahan:
- aluminum, alloy àdilapisi kedua permukaannya atau bagian luar dicetak
- steel à sulit dibuat
- TFS àdihindari karena keausan tool yang tidak bisa diterima selama proses scoring dan pembentukan keling
Masalah pada EOC yang terjadi dan pemecahannya
· Ring penarik tutup menimbulkan masalah sampah - Desain ring penarik tutup yang tidak bisa terpisah dari tutup
· Pengelingan terhadap ring penarik tutup dari aluminum (bimetallic container) rawan korosi - Dikembangkan steel easy open unit, namun sulit pembuatannya
· Bahaya ledakan atau kebocoran - Kontrol kondisi scoring
Proses pembuatan EOE (Easy Open Ends)
n pemotongan blank rata dengan ukuran sesuai kebutuhan
n Pembentukan pinggiran yang dicanangkan untuk seaming (pelipitan) dan curl (keritingan)
n Deposisi seaming compound diikuti dengan drying
n Pengepresan panel steps atau rusuk-rusuk untuk memperkuat tutup melawan tekanan internal

Tahap penyolderan Sisi lipat

n dipotong-potong menjadi seukuran body kaleng (termasuk sisi pelipitan) dengan slitting m/c
n ujung body blank diberi tekukan untuk menghindari ketebalan extra dimana sisi pelipitan dikeriting ke tutup
n penekukan ujung-ujung sisi (hook) kemudian dilapisi film flux
n pengerolan
n penggabungan (pelipitan) sisi pelipitan diberi pemenasan awal dengan gas jet
n penyolderan; dalam bak solder cair (2% tin dan 98% lead)
n Pemberian
enamel/ lacquer kadang diberikan lagi terhadap salah satu atau kedua
permukaan lipatan (disebut “side stripping”) dalam rangka memperbaiki
kerusakan enemel awal yang mungkin rusak akibat panas dari solder

Keuntungan dilas:
n pengurangan /pembuangan lead dari permukaan pelipitan; lead tidak aman untuk produk makanan
n overlap untuk pengelasan 0,4-0,5 mm
